People had shared with me their deep disappointment regarding internal church processes and debates about structure. I sensed a certain sense of hopelessness in many of them. The question occurred to me: where can the many positive experiences we are privileged to have with so many young people in the go4peace network find their place? I read the Sunday Gospel. “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed. It is the smallest of all seeds, yet it grows into a large tree, so that even the birds can nest in its branches.” These words encouraged me to continue on our path and to keep sharing our experiences. A day later, I received a letter from France. It was from a Swedish Lutheran pastor. He had spent a few days in Taizé with some young adults from his parish. He sent me precisely this message about the mustard seed! And so I read once again that birds build their nests and seek shade in the fully grown mustard plant. How many ‘migratory birds of our time’—as I like to call the younger generation—had stopped off on the branches of our tree over the past few months and found encouragement for their lives.
