Peace – this precious gift: how can we open up pathways for young people to become peacemakers themselves? – We sat together in a small team from a secondary school, reflecting on this question. All 1,500 pupils would receive a small wooden peace reminder, but what specific step could this little wooden reminder help them to remember again and again? I explained that I often promise people I will think of them and pray for them during difficult and challenging times in their lives. “I then give these people a specific place in my heart and carry them with me in my thoughts. Often, when I have prayed for them in our church during the evening, I light a candle for them and send them a photo of it. I feel at peace with them when they are in my heart.” A young Muslim social worker listened very attentively. “I’m really moved,” she told me, “I’ve never considered this way of offering others a place in my heart. But I’m glad I can try it out now. Next time we meet, I’ll tell you about my experiences.”
