How are you?

I rushed to the post box, as I’d heard about an elderly woman who was entering the final stage of her life, so I’d written her a card that I hoped would reach her in time. On the way, I met a homeless man. He’d come from Iran over 10 years ago. I’d known him and hadn’t seen him for a long time. I greeted him briefly. He spoke to me, so I stopped. “How are you?” he asked me. I looked at him and replied: “I’m satisfied and in peace with myself!" His reply: “Oh, you don’t hear that very often. To be content, to be in peace with oneself, that is the greatest gift, for that is something you cannot buy with money or anything else in the world. What a statement: to be in peace!" Then he smiled at me, wished me a lovely evening and said: ‘Oh, if only I could be in peace with myself like that too.’
