Just being there!

I hadn't heard anything from a young couple I had married for over a decade. Then, unexpectedly, I received the news: ‘My wife has end-stage cancer. Can you bury her?’ I was very shocked, as I knew them well from the peace camps. ‘My sheep listen to my voice!’ I had read in the gospel in the morning. Listening to my inner voice, I understood: ‘Go there!’ After two and a half hours in the car, I arrived at the house where the family lived. With palliative care, the mother of two small children was able to be at home. We spent two and a half hours talking about everything that has happened and is happening now with great openness and honesty. ‘Do you have an idea of heaven?’ I asked. She replied in the negative. She asked about mine. ‘Can you feel how much we are there for each other in these hours and are really completely there. I have the impression that the one who called us into existence is also there. And that is heaven for me: arriving in the great presence and simply being there (loved).’ - ‘Now I understand,’ my counterpart let me know, ‘why I often just want to lay here and look at the beautiful nature. I am then simply there and a deep peace comes into my heart!’
